CELESTIAL ONE LINE A DAY

Yao Cheng Design- Celestial One Line a Day- Chronicle Books

Hello everyone,

I have some really exciting news to share with all of you today!  Over the last year, I have been collaborating with Chronicle Books on some really beautiful stationery products.  Each have been a truly rewarding experience in their own way, but to kick-off the first product release, we are having a FREE giveaway of our Celestial One Line a Day and a coordinating Indigo Dots art print!

In the spirit of today's total solar eclipse, it could not be more fitting to talk to you guys about my inspiration and process behind this collaboration!  This project was extra special to me because I personally have been using this journal, everyday, to capture the birth and each day after of my son, Eliott's life.  So you can imagine the excitement (and general glee!) I felt to be asked to give this line for Chronicle Books a refresh!  Each day, as I jot down that day's new memory, I also get to read what our life with him was like the exact year before!

The Chronicle team initially came to me with the idea of translating one of my very first art prints- Indigo Dots, into the cover design.  The idea was really intriguing, as the constellation-like swirls would give this journal an air of wonder and mystique.  We then adorned the cover with some gold foiled dots, which added another layer of pizzazz and shine!  Watercolor washes are always so intriguing and unique in their very individual blends, so we wanted this aspect to carry throughout the journal.  Once we had the exterior cover finalized, I went on to create a few different soft washes to compliment the exterior.  There are actually a few different washes inside from one page to the next, giving it even more movement and variety!

Like I said, the Indigo Dots print was one of my first watercolor paintings.  It was created during a time of exploration and curiosity as to what I wanted to say with my work.  I remember I wanted to use the color of the indigo-dyed textiles from Japanese as a starting point, but then combine it with my fascination for surface patterns to create movement.  The result is an interesting dance between the white, swirling dots and the ever-shifting wash of indigo blues!  I am really glad to see this classic artwork make its way onto the covers of these daily journals.  It's definitely an interesting interpretation of capturing memories in our ever-expanding world.

***This giveaway is NOW CLOSED, thank you to everyone for participating!***

This journal is now available at Chronicle BooksBarnes & Noble, Paper Source, Target and many other large retailers!

Cheers,

Yao
