Cityscapes- Part 2

Chicago Skyline / Yao Cheng Design

chicago:

During the early years of my business, I would drive into Chicago twice a year to attend craft shows and workshops to share my work. Those were some crazy hustling years where I would arrive home at 4am tired but elated. And the architecture! Whenever its skyline approached into view, I would be in awe of it all. For this piece, I wanted the the skyline to take center stage. Bringing in my love for painting repetitions and nature, this is one of my proudest artworks. There is just enough detail that makes one want to fall into its world but not so much that it feels overwhelming.

As I mentioned in Part 1, before I could arrive at this Skyline version, I painted some smaller snippets of the city. An earlier rendition of Cloud Gate in Millennium Park was a great first step!

seattle:

Another complex cityscape was Seattle. I knew I wanted to show a hint of its nature and have it serve as the backdrop, but it was tricky figuring out how to do it compositionally. With this entire Travel series, I knew I did not want to write in the name of the city. This was my way of making sure that the image, on its own, can communicate the place that I’m depicting. Most of the time, this was successful. As for this painting, I knew that the Space Needle can hold its own and describe the place without me spelling it out.

austin:

Speaking of painting cities that are close to my heart- Austin, Texas is another one! Having grown up most of my life in Texas, this city and entire state was special for me to paint. Like with Chicago, I began with painting a smaller version of Dallas before venturing into one of downtown Austin. Dallas was where I would frequent from the suburbs. Growing up, it felt like the place for all of the glitz and glam! I created this painting as part of a Bespoke wedding map.

This print showcases Congress Avenue leading to the capitol! Dear to my heart, I love seeing the city from this vantage point.

columbus:

The last watercolor I want to share, though this post will continue to be updated with new work, is my artwork of Columbus, Ohio. The city that I now call home, this painted view is my daily commute into my art studio in downtown. I have a feeling I will paint another version of Columbus in the future. There are more stories to tell of this amazing place!
