About Yao
Yao Cheng is a renowned artist based in Columbus, Ohio, USA. Since 2012, she has been creating joyful watercolor paintings for your everyday home brand collaborations.
Yao's art captures what we cannot see, cannot say, but can always feel.
Hand-painted with lush details, they are inspired by nature and wind-swept grasslands.
Inspired by Post-Impressionist painters, Yao wanted to capture the movement of a wind-swept grassland using strokes and color. The textures of the painted grass are striking against the color-washed sky. This painting was made with watercolor and gouache.

Yao is mesmerized by them—the rhythm, the continual change, and the way they intersect with other ripples nearby.

Yao has always been fascinated by the human form. This series of drawings is her latest attempt to capture swift movement with drawn lines. In this line drawing, she was inspired by her first children's book project and a child's carefree ability to run into a grassland and dance with the wind. It reminds her that the simplest parts of life can be the most beautiful. This artwork was drawn to also pair with "Swirling Girl No. 2".
Hahnemuhle Paper: This drawing is printed on an archival heavyweight, 100% cotton rag with a distinct, velvety-soft matte texture.

This painting has many inspirations- but the main one here is music. Yao was imagining an endless meadow swaying in the wind. Perhaps there is also a symphony of the sounds of nature in the background, orchestrating this grand performance! Another inspiration comes from years of painting her first children's book (coming in 2027). Those artworks sparked her imagination to create worlds that are brimmed with detail.

This is also a hand-painted watercolor of Casares, Spain. In this version, Yao has expanded the color palette of this town by combining the playful architecture with vibrant colors she came across in flower pots. Her most delightful paintings come from unexpected combinations such as this!

"Grass Sway No. 2" is part of a larger and on-going series about light and wind. She is a lifelong student of the Impressionism, where the study of shifting light will never cease to amaze her creative brain! This painting is specifically inspired by Monet but infused with her own style for colors and patterns. This artwork was hand-painted with watercolor and gouache.

This painting is a mosaic of many different inspirations—kaleidoscopes, science, movement, geometry. It came to Yao one day when she stumbled upon an image of a gemstone that is shaped like an egg. Imbued with many different hues of violet and blue, the gemstone sparkled and moved in a way that fascinated her. 'Mosaic' is her imagining of this gemstone as it shifts, blooms and twirls in space.

Yao is deeply fascinated by the science of outer space. The colors of a nebula remain a constant inspiration in her work. This painting explores one such nebula, reinterpreted with hexagon shapes. There is a center gravity of crimson red that slowly expands outward into a confetti of purple, peach, and blue. Created alongside "Nebula in Violet", this watercolor was attempted by Yao five other times before she arrived at this final piece. Yao maintains a rigorous painting process of editing and refining, selecting only the very best version of her work for you to enjoy.

This is part of Yao's Swirl series. In this group of watercolors, she was deeply inspired by water droplets. She is mesmerized by the ripples of water—the rhythm, the continual change, and the way they intersect with other ripples nearby. "Rainbow Swirl No. 1" is a reimagining of this phenomenon but with painted circles added in. She imagines them as tiny droplets, swirling around a center point. Rainbows of color are used here to also create depth- they are like the rings of ripples that radiate outward.

This is part of Yao's Swirl series. In this painting, she explores the relationship between a nebula in space and water droplets in the sea. There is something poetic about bringing together the massive and the minuscule. Yao sees many similarities in how both of these things move, and she is deeply drawn to their rhythmic nature. This watercolor captures both, bringing the vibrant colors of a nebula and the delicate ripples of water together.

This watercolor was created alongside "Rainbow Swirl No. 1". Rather than using a rainbow of colors as her palette, Yao decided to focus on just the pink and purple spectrum.
