ABOUT YAO CHENG

Hello! I am an artist based in Columbus, Ohio. I found my passion for art when I was 4 years old, during my first drawing class. Since then, I have never stopped making things with my hands- I was instantly hooked! In college, I studied at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) and then worked for a few years in the fashion industry before starting my creative business.

My art is joyful.

Founded in 2012, Yao Cheng Design is my art studio where I’m dedicated to making joyful art- this is what art has given me, and I hope to share it with you!

My art is calming.

In our over-saturated digital world, my watercolors are here to offer you a moment of rest. Slow but intentional, my paintings focuses on our physical world and the experiences within our daily life. They capture the things we cannot see, cannot say but can always feel.

  • Over a decade ago, I started painting in watercolor. It was immediately clear that this was my medium- it was instantly captivating, you cannot help but be pulled into its world of swirling colors and shifting washes. Watch them here. There are unpredictable moments and impossible mistakes, but watercolor teaches me to be ok with imperfections. In fact, it is to be celebrated and listened to. Here, in this world of wonder, art is momentous and makes you believe that anything is possible.

    Painted in Ohio, I create every piece by hand, relying on my years of technical art training as my guide. AI is never part of my process, and any digitization is made only to preserve the unique features of watercolor.
