“Cinque Terre, Italy” I Yao Cheng
When I travel, the memories that I take with me tend to be the colors that I see. With Italy, the colors that went with me were all candy-colored rainbows! This country is actually where my Travel print series began...In 2014, I was taking an evening stroll in the coastal town of Positano (Amalfi Coast) when I looked up and was awestruck by the candy-colored buildings that sat right on top of the mountainous cliffs. I had never seen anything like this! I couldn't resist setting up my travel painting kit the next day to paint that moment. That first sketch was how I became obsessed with painting different cities, towns, places. “Cinque Terre, Italy” I Yao Cheng
"Cinque Terre" is the latest of my Italy Travel prints. It was a cherry on top to have visited this place- all of the details that I've added into this artwork were made extra special having seen it in person. For every home I stacked on top of another, for every window I painted in, I imagined myself looking out on that balcony at the view of the Mediterranean sea. By the way, this is an artwork that gets better the bigger size you go! Frame it in a 30” x 40", and you'll be able to walk yourself right into these details.
After 3 years of painting this watercolor of Manarola in Cinque Terre, Italy, it finally has the right amount of detail to accurately capture this incredible place! Fun fact- while she was completing this painting, she had the chance to visit these towns on the Italian Riviera coastline, which made finishing it all the more special! Read the blog post.

“...my watercolors do not have to be perfect. They just need to capture the feeling I am going after...”
In truth, it took me 3 years of courage to complete this artwork. I felt very intimidated to finish it. There were doubts about if I could possibly create a painted version that would capture all of the details and specialness of this place. But, after seeing this village in person in Manarola (this artwork’s exact view) , I realized that my watercolors do not have to be perfect. They just need to capture the feeling I am going after, and in this case, I wanted to feel like I was inside a rainbow!
